Thomas Nip and Ferrida Chan awarded Patrick Yu Memorial Scholarship 2025

Plowman Chambers warmly congratulates our members Thomas Nip and Ferrida Chan on being awarded the Patrick Yu Memorial Scholarship by the Hong Kong Bar Association.

The ceremony held on 28 July 2025 was graced by numerous distinguished guests including the Secretary for Justice, the Honourable Mr. Justice Patrick Chan NPJ, the Honourable Madam Justice Susan Kwan V-P, the Honourable Mr. Justice Macrae V-P (former member of Chambers), and the Honourable Madam Justice Poon JA.

This distinguished scholarship recognises their outstanding potential and dedication in criminal law, offering invaluable opportunities to gain practical experience in handling legal aid criminal cases under the mentorship of a more senior counsel. Congratulations once again to Thomas and Ferrida on this recognition.

Thomas’s practice comprises both criminal and civil litigation.  On the criminal side, Thomas has represented clients involved in a wide spectrum of offences including sexual offences, driving offences, immigration offences, customs and excise offences and industrial summons.  In particular, Thomas has a strong focus on white-collar crimes (money laundering and bribery offences) and market misconduct investigations.  He is also experienced in criminal appeals. Thomas is also experienced in advising and acting for clients before different statutory boards and tribunals for disciplinary matters and appeals.

Ferrida’s practice spans commercial, corruption, criminal, regulatory and disciplinary matters. She advises and acts as a sole advocate or led junior at all levels of court including the Court of Final Appeal, Court of Appeal, Court of First Instance, Market Misconduct Tribunal, Family Court and Lands Tribunal. She also frequently advises and represents clients in various disciplinary hearings, such as disciplinary proceedings in the Listing Review Committee, Civil Service Bureau, Estate Agents Authority, Nursing Council of Hong Kong and Social Worker Registration Board. In 2024, Ferrida is ranked as a “Rising Star” in “Regulatory Investigations and Crime” by The Legal 500 directory, being recognised as “intelligent, skilled and well-prepared”.
